Holly Jubera and her husband Steve have a lot of things in common, but it’s their love of Halloween that led them to open a pop-up, temporary business on the downtown Square in Oxford.
“Ever since my husband and I met we’ve dressed up for Halloween,” Holly Jubera said. “Our first family portrait was in our Halloween costumes.”
Halloween costumes for all sizes, shapes and ages will be on sale at Thacker Mountain Halloween from 3 to 9 p.m. on Thursdays and Fridays, 12 to 9 p.m. on Saturdays and 12 to 6 p.m. on Sundays. During the week prior to Halloween, the costume store will be open Monday-Wednesday from 3 to 9 p.m.
The grand opening will be Thursday, Oct. 11 at 3 p.m.
“Customers who come see us (Thursday) can enter to win a prize valued at $24,” Holly said. “There will be one free entry for everyone who comes sees us and two entries for those who make a purchase.”
The costume shop will close after the Halloween holiday.
The Juberas moved from Chicago to Oxford in 2003. Not finding the selection of Halloween costumes they wanted in town, they would travel to Memphis in search of the perfect costumes. It was then the idea to open the pop-up costume store was born.
“We figured we weren’t alone in our hatred of driving to shop for the costume of the year,” Holly said. “We also thought it would be a lot of fun and a good opportunity to meet people in and around Oxford.”
Thacker Mountain Halloween will be located at 415 S. Lamar Blvd. in the former tourism building, north of the Chancellor’s House hotel. Holly said finding someone willing to rent the space for just a month was challenging.
“We had just about given up on finding a spot and were going to sell online only,” Holly said. “Then, early one morning, we decided to walk Lamar instead of Whirlpool Trails and stumbled upon the old Visitor’s building. We gave the owner a call and things went from there.”
Costumes will range from cute to gory to cheesy to sexy.
“We’ve also got costume accessories and a ton of FX makeup and blood – lots, and lots of blood,” Holly said.
