Boneheads is one of the many restaurants giving it a go in the gastronomic conscious town of Oxford.
Located at the new Jackson Avenue shopping center, the new-to-Oxford restaurant had a soft opening May 18 and will hold a grand opening later this summer. Based in Atlanta, there are several Boneheads restaurants across the South.
Boneheads is the brainchild of two chefs who had different ideas about the restaurant they wanted, but decided to combine them to create what we have today. Aiming for the health-conscious eaters in Oxford, they specialize in grilled fish and chicken. But as manger Jamie Irby says, “We offer healthy food, but don’t require it.” The menu also includes a bacon cheddar burger for those who aren’t counting calories each meal.
If you are forgoing or allergic to gluten, they also have a generous gluten-free menu, so finding something without America’s favorite grain protein should not be too difficult.
Along with a slew of healthy sides, such as broccoli, grilled asparagus and grilled zucchini, Boneheads also offers fries or sweet potato fries for anyone looking for something a little starchier.
Another cornerstone the restaurant builds its menu upon is the Piri Piri (pronounced pee-ree pee-ree) sauce. According to the Boneheads website, it is based on the African bird’s eye chili pepper and can be traced back to 16th century Mozambique where the Portuguese found and fell in love with it.
The vinegar-based sauce comes anywhere from a mild lemon and herb version to XXX hot. It’s used as a marinade, to sauté meat, or as a sauce option at the table.
All the fish used at Boneheads comes from fishermen using sustainable fishing practices. Everything but the catfish (which is farm raised) is wild-caught.
Boneheads sits comfortably in the fast-casual dining category; providing more thoughtfully prepared food at a decent price point, but with no table service. They want to be your healthy, quick-lunch option. Finding fish in town at this price, outside of Long John Silver’s or Captain D’s, is difficult.
“Tell me where else you can find mahi-mahi with grilled zucchini over a bed of seasoned rice without going to the Square and paying a nice tab for it,” brags Irby. He is confident not only in the quality of ingredients but also their ability to serve it in a timely fashion, claiming an eight- to ten-minute ticket time for most dishes.
Although not yet an option, Boneheads will soon be serving alcohol for customers of age and will also serve cake from a local bakery.
Boneheads is open 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. everyday and you can visit the website to view the menu. Go try Boneheads at 1801 Jackson Ave W d116 or call (662) 638-3636 for more info.
