University of Mississippi Athletic Director Ross Bjork tweeted out an apology yesterday after featuring former Ole Miss head coach Tommy Tuberville on the Jumbotron at Saturday night’s home game against Texas A&M.
A less than popular figure in Oxford, Tuberville was the color commentator for ESPN 2’s coverage of the game. After halftime, Ole Miss fans watched on the Jumbotron as a video played showing Tuberville asking the fans, “Are you ready?” which typically leads to the Hotty Toddy chant ringing throughout the stadium.
Bjork said in his tweet that the video was meant to “provide levity.” Instead, boos rang out from outraged fans who still hold a grudge against Tuberville. When Tuberville was the head coach of the Rebels from 1995-98, he famously told fans that the only way he would leave Oxford would be in a pine box, even as rumors spread that he would accept the job as Auburn’s head coach. He ended up taking the job, and Ole Miss fans have never forgotten – and many have never forgiven – his broken promise.
