With Schools Out for Summer, Motorists Urged to Use Caution

The Mississippi Department of Education along with the Mississippi Highway Patrol, are urging motorist to use caution concerning students throughout the summer months.
With students out of school for the summer, Dr. Carey Wright, state superintendent of education, urges motorists to remain vigilant in watching out for children who may be riding their bikes or walking along roadways. Student drivers should also take extra precautions, especially refraining from texting while driving.
“We want students to have an enjoyable and safe summer break. Motorists should drive carefully through areas where children are playing or riding bikes, and student drivers should remain alert and focused when behind the wheel,” Wright said.
MHP is also asking for responsible decisions on the part of drivers.
“Due to the amount of summer traffic and schools being out across the state, we want to remind everyone of the number of children and young drivers that will be encountered on the roadways,” said Colonel Donnell Berry, Director of the Mississippi Highway Patrol. “Responsible decisions by drivers in Mississippi help us ensure a safe and enjoyable summer for all.”
The MHP Public Affairs Division will also implement their safe driving initiative titled D.R.I.V.E to bring awareness concerning safe driving practices. “Focus will be placed on distracted driving, seatbelt usage and impaired driving,” said Lieutenant Johnny Poulos, Director of MHP Public Affairs. “Our mission is to inform and educate drivers with the huge responsibilities of getting behind the wheel.”
