Ward One Special Elections Held Today At Oxford Conference Center
A special election for the Ward One Alderman position is today in Oxford at the Oxford Conference Center from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m.
Former alderman for Ward One, Jay Hughes, resigned the position in December after being elected to the House of Representatives for district 12. Rick Addy and Jordan Bankhead are the two candidates campaigning for the Ward One spot.
Addy, 51, a native of Oxford, is a business owner and a photographer for Addy Photography. Addy lives in Oxford with his wife, Megan, and their three children.
“As lifelong residents of Oxford and graduates of our public schools, my wife and I are raising our family with a commitment to invest in the exciting future of the town we love,” Addy said on his Facebook page. “I’ve watched Oxford’s unprecedented growth and see the need for balance between carefully planned growth and preservation of our historical community. I want my children to always feel the sense of community so important to me.”
Bankhead, 39, is a member of the Chamber of Commerce, a past chairman. Bankhead lives in Oxford with his wife, Natasha, and their two children. Bankhead is part of the L.O.U. Home Board and the Rotary Club. A alumni of Ole Miss, Bankhead ran for the Mississippi House of Representatives in 2011.
“I decided to run for Ward 1 Alderman to serve Oxford and this community that has embraced me. When I first arrived here in 2002, a lawyer on the Square hired me and gave me my professional start. Then, Oxford High School hired me as a substitute teacher and allowed me to pay my bills during graduate school,” Bankhead posted on his public Facebook page from an interview with The Oxford Eagle. “This town has been good to me and my family, and when this seat became available, I thought it would be a good opportunity to use my professional and service experience to give back further.”
A Board of Alderman meeting will also be held this evening at 5 p.m. at the City Hall courtroom.
