When New England Patriot Malcolm Butler made the game-sealing interception in the end zone to inevitably win Super Bowl XLIX, the Vicksburg native became a household name.

Now, the Mississippi River town is ready to honor their favorite NFL player.

“We need to get approval from his family or him before we can do anything,” Mayor George Flaggs Jr. told The Vicksburg Post Tuesday. “We don’t want to do anything that’s going to hurt the young man or his contract.”

Butler graduated from Vicksburg High School and later went to play for the University of West Alabama and went undrafted in 2014. Before the Super Bowl, Butler only had 15 tackles and 3 passes defended in his NFL career.

The city of Vicksburg will announce plans to honor Butler after talking with him and his family. Until then, the name “Malcolm Butler” will be on the lips and the minds of all the Mississippians who tuned into the Big Game.
