Trio of Basketball Rebels Pick Up SEC Honors
Senior guard Marshall Henderson and junior guard Jarvis Summers were both named to the All-SEC second team as voted on by the league’s coaches, the conference office announced Tuesday.
Henderson, a second team All-SEC pick by the coaches a year ago, finished conference play ranked third in the league in scoring at 19.1 points per game and ranks third in the nation hitting 4.29 3-pointers a game. He has also made a 3-pointer in an SEC record 64-straight games dating back to last season. Henderson also picked up the All-District second team honors from the US Basketball Writers Association for the second-consecutive year.
Summers, who also won the Howell Trophy winner as the best college basketball player in Mississippi this year, earned All-SEC honors for the first time in his career. He ranks eighth in the league in scoring (16.9 ppg), seventh in field goal percentage (.483) and fourth in assists (3.8/game), and is the only player in the conference to rank in the top 10 in the SEC in scoring and field goal percentage and top five in assists.
Junior Demarco Cox was also named to the 2014 SEC Community Service team, the league office announced on Monday. Cox, a Yazoo City, Miss., native, helped hold a basketball clinic for local Boy’s and Girl’s Club and participated in Move Mississippi, an event designed to combat child obesity by educating youth and parents about the benefits of physical fitness and living a healthy lifestyle. Cox also volunteered during the year at the Oxford Exchange Club Family Center, and is an active participant in the Reading with the Rebels program, where he visits local elementary schools to read to children.
The Rebels begin their SEC Tournament title defense on Thursday at 8:30 p.m., against the winner of the Mississippi State-Vanderbilt game.
