The Mississippians Jazz Ensemble Plays Concert, Prepares for Jazz Alumni Ensemble
On April 14, 2016, the Mississippians Jazz Ensemble held a concert at the Nutt Auditorium for students and Oxford residents to enjoy.
The jazz ensemble dates back to a group of Ole Miss students who played dance music in the 1890s and is the oldest college jazz ensemble in the nation.
The ensemble came prepared, as they played some pieces that were soothing to those who listened. Soft melodies filled the air as the head saxophone performed a solo. The drums were just as captivating, instilling their harmonious beat into the hearts and minds of all who were present; the soft yet static “pit-pat” playing gracefully.

“Last night’s concert couldn’t have gone better,” said Dr. Worthy, conductor of the ensemble, on Friday. “The band is tight right now coming off of a very high profile performance at Notre Dame. We are looking forward to performing with the Jazz Alumni Band on Saturday, May 7, in the Nutt Auditorium.”
The head trumpet also played a solo. It felt as though they brought the home of music to the Nutt Auditorium. The jazz melodies were a reminder of how beautiful and essential music is.
