Be Ready for April Awareness Police Checkpoints
This month, the Oxford Police Department is conducting April Awareness, with driver and cyclist safety checkpoints throughout the city, according to a release from the department. Officers will be checking for current licenses, vehicle registrations and buckled seatbelts, along with the standard check to ensure drivers aren’t operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
Officers also want to promote safer cycling, and to ensure bicyclists are aware of the rules of the road and how to stay safe in mixed road traffic.

Oxford Police Department investigators arrested Gamal Eldib, 32, from Grenada, on Wednesday after he was stopped on a routine traffic stop by Grenada Police Department.
According to police, a check of his driver’s license showed a felony uttering forgery warrant from the Oxford Police. The charges stem from the victim signing uttering forgery charges against him in September 2013. Eldib’s bond is set at $2,500.
The Oxford Police Department investigated seven wrecks, issued 58 tickets and made eight arrests, on the following charges: two disturbing the peace; two no headlights and first-offense DUI; suspended driver’s license, no insurance, warrant served, first-offense DUI; careless driving, possession of drug paraphernalia, first-offense DUI; careless driving, first-offense DUI; and public drunk.
Oxford Police also responded to six disturbances, five alarms, five ambulance assists, two fire department assists, two 911 hang-up calls, two lost property, two suspicious activity, suspicious person, public drunk, careless driving, welfare concern, harassing phone calls and lost property.
The University Police Department responded to the following incidents Thursday, April 10: Drugs – possession of paraphernalia, careless driving, excessive speed for conditions, traffic assists on Coliseum Drive, three hit-and-run accidents, two motor vehicle accidents, petit larceny at Conner Hall, ambulance needed at Women’s Athletic Complex and burglary – taking items from auto at Stockard Hall.
The Oxford Fire Department responded to the following call Thursday, April 10:
– Wreck with entrapment, extricated one patient, on West Jackson Avenue at the entrance to Walmart, at 10:44 a.m.
– Fire alarm malfunction, at Your Extra Closet on Industrial Road, at 6:49 p.m.
– Smoke detector malfunction, at Northgate B-204, at 6:58 p.m.
– Found an orange burned on the stove eye, which activated the smoke detector, at 107 Falls Grove, at 2:52 a.m.
– Smell of smoke, first responders found a cup that had burned in the garbage can with no fire, at Taco Bell, at 6:05 a.m.
