Take care walking on the Oxford Square. Pedestrians have the right-of-way but sometimes drivers don’t know that.

When driving, cars going around the square have the right-of-way over cars entering the square. Traffic is one-way.
Don’t park your car for more than three hours on the Square during business hours or you will get a ticket. Pick an off-square parking lot and hang there.
Avoid Jackson Avenue (Square to Wal-Mart) early or late as people rush to and from work and class. Four lanes of madness that turns into crazy time!
Beware! Oxford Police write lots of tickets on Highway 6 during the fall semester.

Speed limit on West Highway 6 coming to Oxford is 65 mph. But, as you approach the city, the speed limit drops to 55 mph, then to 50 mph for about a quarter of a mile at the first exit at West Jackson Avenue. Adding to speed confusion, the speed limit goes back to 55 mph and then to 65 mph as you exit the Highway 6 bypass going East. Cops patrol and ticket heavily first semester to make the point that you have don’t speed. Remember the sequence: from 65 to 55, to 50, to 55 and back to 65 as you make your way across the east-west highway!
Thursday night is the big time out, bar specials, but remember classes begin at 8 a.m. on Friday. Cops on patrol, don’t consume and drive, keep your cool.
When you’ve partied too much and the bars close, help is available at the 4-Corners Chevron where you will find world famous “chicken on a stick”. Best meal in town at 1 a.m.; coats your stomach speeds your recovery.
Best known justice is Judge McLarty, try to meet him at the Beacon, Handy Andy or Skymart, not at his courtroom. Buddy East has been Sheriff of Lafayette County for more than three decades. His son, Joey, is Oxford’s Chief of Police. You don’t want to meet either Buddy in his offices in the Lafayette County Detention Center (jail), located in front of Judge McLarty’s courtroom!
three peeps copyNote: it is illegal to drive a car on the Oxford square! Auto prohibition put on the books when horse and buggy prevailed, has never been repealed. But of course all ignore it. Like there is NO under age drinking in Oxford, too!
