Secret Show Committee is tight-lipped about details of United Way fundraiser.
The United Way of Oxford-Lafayette County is happy to have a new benefactor, even if it is a secret. The community organization was recently approached by a strange new committee in Oxford and offered a deal they could not refuse.
The Secret Show Committee, a group of local artists, foodies, cocktail connoisseurs and others, was preparing for their first interactive art event when they realized something was missing. They needed a beneficiary for their one-night-only show on September 27. This unusual event will donate its proceeds to the United Way, if the United Way agrees to play along.
“They wanted to create something new and interactive—to change the way people interact with art and each other,” says Katherine Drinkwater, assistant director of United Way of Oxford-Lafayette County. “We are very excited to have been offered an opportunity to be involved. I cannot say too much. Keeping the secret was part of the agreement. I can say that when the committee mentioned puppets though, we were in.”
The Secret Committee’s goal is to change the way people think about art shows and fundraisers, tossing out cheese and grape platters and encouraging attendees to be involved with the experience. The Secret Committee selected the United Way to receive the funds from the event because their role in the community parallels the idea behind the show.
“They felt we are committed to bringing people together, which is just what this event will do,” says Drinkwater.
Stacey Sanford, Americorp VISTA member, learned about the event when members of the committee contacted the Yoknapatawpha Arts Council to borrow equipment for the event.
“It was hard to explain to the Board of Directors for the arts council that a secret group wanted to borrow sound, lights and props, but I couldn’t tell who they are or what they are doing,” says Sanford. “I think the mystery is exciting. I hope it sets the mood for the evening and encourages people to be ready for anything.”
The one-night-only event will take place on Friday, September 27 from 7 to 10 p.m. in a secret location, only revealed to attendants the day of the event by email or text. There are no “tickets” to buy, and the event is free, but the only way to get on the list and receive the location and password is to make a $10 per person donation online at www.SecretShowOxford.EventBrite.com.
“The best part is they have hinted at elements of the event, but we are going to learn right along with the guests,” says Drinkwater.
