Rifle Team Opens Season At Memphis Invitational
Team to host shoot Pink match Sunday
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Ole Miss rifle team opened the season at the Memphis Invitational Thursday, shooting a combined score of 4600 in smallbore and air rifle here at the Ranger Master shooting facility.
The Rebels shot a 2268 in smallbore led by senior Abbey Stanec’s 576. Senior Melissa Quartarone shot a 571.
In air rifle, the Rebels posted a 2332 score led by senior Rena Goodwin’s 587. Stanec recorded a 583, and Quartarone had a 582.
Two of the Rebels’ three freshmen made their debut. Alison Weisz of Montana shot a 578 in air rifle, and Nicolle Thiry (Pennsylvania) posted a 563 in smallbore.
“It was not the start we were looking for, said head coach Valerie Boothe, who began her 17th season as the Rebel mentor. “We will learn from this match and get ready to rebound for Saturday’s home opener. We want to encourage everyone in the Oxford area to come out and support us in our first annual Breast Cancer Awareness match.”
Saturday’s match will start at 8 a.m. at the Patricia C. Lamar National Guard Readiness Center located off Highway 7 and Sisk Avenue.
The Rebels will wear pink visors Saturday. Fans in attendance will receive a pink Ole Miss Rifle seat cushion, and the team will auction off five gift bags donated by Baptist Memorial Hospital with proceeds going towards breast cancer research.
