Rebels Travel to the Sunshine State for a Three-Game Series with UCF
The No. 18 Ole Miss Rebel baseball team hits the road this weekend as they travel down to the Orlando to take on the Central Florida Golden Knights.
Ole Miss (5-2) is coming off a tough 2-1 midweek victory over Arkansas State win of 2-1, a team that came into town after taking two of three games from Louisville.
Senior Sikes Orvis added to his home run total by belting out a shot on his first at bat Tuesday afternoon moving his total to two on the young season.
The UCF Knights are 8-0 on the season and are sitting at No. 15 in the nation. As a club, the Knights have been hot at the plate, hitting at a .351 clip with four batters that are hitting over .400. Sophomore Matt Diorio is leading the team in batting this season with a .517 average to go along with 15 singles, four doubles, a triple and eight RBI. Last season, Diorio hit .288 with 30 singles, 4 doubles, a triple, home run and 17 RBI.
Diorio’s followed by freshman Kyle Marsh who is hitting .483 with 14 hits, 4 doubles and 2 home runs and a total of 15 RBI’s. While seniors Tommy Williams and JoMarcos Woods round out the top four hitters above .400 through the first eight games, coming into this weekend hitting .419 and .409 respectively.
As a club this season, UCF has boasted a total of 34 extra base hits while holding its opponents 14 extra base knocks on the season. Tonight, the Golden Knights are sending senior Zach Rodgers to the hill. Rodfers is 1-0 on the year with a 3.00 ERA in nine innings of work, giving up three runs on 10 hits, and striking out seven batters on the season.
Tomorrow UCF will give the ball to freshman Cre Finfrock who was drafted in the 26th round by the Milwaukee Brewers back in June. Frinfrock is 2-0 on the season and has worked 11.2 innings giving up two runs on seven hits for a 1.54 ERA.
Sunday the Rebels will face sophomore Robby Howell who is 2-0 with a 2.31 ERA after working 11.2 innings, only giving up four runs on 13 hits.The UCF weekend rotation have a combined 5-0 record.
Coach Mike Bianco is going to do a little flip-flop to the Rebel hurlers as Sam Smith and Brady Bramlett will switch Saturday and Sunday, with Christian Trent maintaining his Friday status.
Ole Miss and Central Florida have only faced each other five times on the diamond prior to this weekend. The Rebels hold a 4-1 advantage after last seasons sweep. First pitch is set for 5:30 tonight, followed by 3:00 tomorrow and 10:30 on Sunday.
