Rebel Bats Overpower UAPB in Mid-Week Game
Ole Miss baseball hosted its second annual Kids’ Day game at Swayze field defeating the Arkansas-Pine Bluff Golden Lions 11-1.
Local elementary school students were in attendance enjoying a great day of baseball. Across the stands, groups of students wore their local teams’ jerseys while cheering on the Rebels to a victory.
No. 16 Ole Miss (22-8) sent seven men to the plate and scored a total of four runs in the fist inning alone.
“After a tough weekend, this is really a much needed win,” head coach Mike Bianco said. “They are a really good team and they are leading their conference, but UAPB has had much harder non-conference schedule then we have had.”
The Rebels then tacked on three more runs in third inning and another in the bottom of the fourth.
Arkansas-Pine Bluff manufactured a single run in the top of the fifth inning, by a fielder’s choice that allowed Mike Wieland to score from third base.
JB Woodman hit a solo shot into the bullpen for the Rebels ninth run of the game and his first home run of the season. The Rebels added two more runs off two RBI singles by Austin Anderson.
“It was really nice to get my first career home run and coach Godwin and I have really been working hard,” Woodman said.
Ole Miss freshman southpaw Evan Anderson worked a total of 3.2 innings, only giving up one hit and struck out one Golden Lion batter. He picked up his first win of the season.
Bianco called on the arms of Jacob Waguespack, Scott Ashford, Preston Tarkington, Austin Blunt and Hawtin Buchanan came into pitch in relief of Anderson.
The Rebels return to the diamond on Friday night as they host the Auburn Tigers in a three game series part of the Grove Bowl weekend activities.
