Andrew Combs has a rich, soulful singing voice and deftness for lyrics in the wheelhouse of his home-state heroes Guy Clark and Kris Kristofferson, two names that inevitably come up when talk turns to the 27-year-old Texas, who is making his name in Nashville and beyond. It might pique your interest to know talking points, such as that American Songwriter magazine lauded his first album as one of the best of the year in 2012 or that Southern Living called him “the next big thing,” but words fall short of describing what the ear will enjoy when Combs performs tonight at Proud Larrys’.
Here’s Combs rocking steady on his recent release “Emily”:

And here’s the artist going a little more intimate with “Too Stoned to Cry”:

If Combs is busting at the seams with musical maturity in a young man’s body, opening act Moon Pie Curtis could be said to be the inverse, but the two acts fit perfectly on a bill together. Guy Clark and Kris Kristofferson are also reference points for the 42-year-old Curtis, but there’s certainly a healthy dose of the child-like wonder and mischief of Jerry Jeff Walker in there with the seasoned subject matter for good measure. Rick Hynum of The Oxford Enterprise wrote, “Peppered with raunchy wit and piercing self-deprecation, Curtis’s songs manage to be autobiographical and universal at the same time, filled with longing … Even the saddest and sweetest of his songs will make you guffaw when you least expect it.”
Curtis will play a short set at around 8:45.
