Oxford Mayor Pat Patterson said, “The Oxford community has lost a good friend. Dr. Jones cares deeply about Oxford and Ole Miss. We wish for he and his wife the best.”
Laura Vaughn of Tupelo said, “I understand Chancellor Jones decision and support him in whatever road he takes next as should everyone else.”
“I am deeply saddened by Chancellor Jones’ resignation, his contributions to the Ole Miss community will never be forgotten. At this time I and am looking forward to seeing what the future holds for the Ole Miss family,” said Haley Irving, a junior at Ole Miss from Falmouth, Massachusetts.
Dick Scruggs of Oxford said, “I am heartbroken for Ole Miss and Dan Jones. The university is in a far better place because of his service. I look forward to support a new Chancellor.”
On Facebook, Dave Robinson posted: “Today Dan Jones released the letter he should have released at the very beginning. His first letter made this whole thing all about him, and in doing so, he did great damage to Ole Miss. The college board is composed of reasonable, respected, and honorable people. Their decision was entitled to respect, not the knee-jerk reactions of people who labeled the college board as ignorant, racist, redneck, etc., etc., etc. And, by all means, let’s now repeal the college board and revert back to the good ole pre-Bilbo days. That only makes sense, rights?”
Ole Miss Alumnus Ray Meifert said on Facebook: “Whether or not you are a supporter of Jones or not it is still ridiculous to know that our university is mainly controlled by people who never went to Ole Miss. I wouldn’t want my local church run by people from other churches. The IHL is an outdated system that again shows that Mississippi remains behind the times in a lot of areas. Most states with top notch schools have Board of Regents overseeing things and those members must have attended that school.”
“Althought Chancellor Jones has brought many positive achievements to the Ole Miss community over th years, I am hopeful the future Ole Miss Chancellor will continue to do great things for our beloved Ole Miss. He will be missed by many,” said Olivia Dunbar, a junior at Ole Miss from Bel Air, Maryland.
