Oxford Police Announce GameDay Traffic Plans

Oxford Police
Oxford Police Chief Joey East has a message to the public, especially to the game day drivers. This is what the public should know for this weekend.
“We are looking forward to hosting Alabama fans this weekend along with our regular game day visitors,” Chief East says in the report.
To ensure that everyone has a fun and safe time celebrating the Oxford police will increase its presence in and around downtown Square. The goal is to be proactive in prevention disturbances and unsafe activities. The police also says to not hesitate in contacting them if need be.
The game day traffic on West Jackson Avenue will be affected. After the game all traffic traveling eastbound or westbound on W. Jackson Ave. will only be allowed to make right turns at intersections. No one will be allowed to make a left turn crossing traffic.
“This will ensure the most efficient exit from the center of the city,” Chief East says in the report.
The westbound traffic on W. Jackson Avenue towards Highway 278 will have two options:
1.) Drivers wanting to ultimately go west on Highway 278 towards Interstate 55 and Batesville are encouraged to stay in the right lane on Jackson and exit onto Anderson Rd where the drivers will be routed to Highway 278 for westbound travel only. No left traffic turns will be allowed.
Chief East asserts it is proven to be the quickest exit towards Batesville.
2.) Drivers wanting to ultimately go east on Highway 278 towards Highway 7 are encouraged to stay in the left lane until passing Anderson Road, where they will be directed to the intersection of Jackson and 278 to turn left and head east. Drivers will also be given the option to go west, but will experience delays.
East said these fixed routes will continue until traffic is flowing freely.
