Oxford Defeats Pearl to Advance to North Half Finals
The Oxford Chargers football team defeated the Pearl Pirates by the score of 39-21 in the second round of the Class 5A State Playoffs on Friday night.
The cold and rainy weather did not affect the Chargers, as they looked determined to advance from the opening kick of the game. Oxford scored 13 unanswered points over Pearl in the first quarter of the game.
In the second quarter, the Pearl Pirates were able to get on the scoreboard with a touchdown after blocking an Oxford punt.
At the half Oxford led Pearl by the score of 20-7.
The Chargers added 13 more points in the third quarter as sophomore quarterback Jack Abraham connected with two Oxford wide receivers in Joey Walden and DK Metcalf for touchdowns.
Pearl was able score two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to add to their score.
With the victory over Pearl the Chargers improve their winning streak to 13 straight games this season. Up next for Oxford is to host a matchup against Callaway next Friday night at Bobby Holcomb Field on the Oxford Chargers campus at 7 p.m.
