Oxford Civic Chorus Presents ‘The Poet Sings’
Literary classics will be set to music.
An upcoming choral production aims to buoy the immortal words of classic authors on a wave of music.
“We are singing lyrics, set to music, of some of the world’s great poets—Shakespeare, William Blake, John Keats, Longfellow, Ogden Nash, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Edgar Allen Poe, and others,” says the Oxford Civic Chorus’s Hubert Spears.
The event is November 24 at 3 p.m. at Nutt Auditorium at the University of Mississippi.
“The music by composers like Edward Elger and Eric Whitaker enhance the meaning of the poetry. Well known and expressive Oxonians will be reading the poetry before we sing the choral versions,” Spears says. “We will have instrumentalists from the Ole Miss Department of Music such as Diane Wong on flute and Michael Worthy on trombone and other members of the Ole Miss Jazz Band.”
Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for students. Tickets are available from chorus members, at the Powerhouse Community Arts Center, or at the door before the performance.
