UPDATE: Winter Weather Advisory for Lafayette County

According to the National Weather Service in Memphis, Tenn., Lafayette County and Oxford are under a Flood Warning (issued at 10 a.m.), a Hazardous Weather Warning, and a Winter Weather Advisory as of 10:17 a.m.

The Winter Weather Advisory reads as follows:

Significant winter storm will continue to impact a large portion of the mid-south through this evening. Arctic cold air will continue to plunge into the mid-south today on gusty northerly winds. Abundant mid-level moisture will override this shallow cold air-mass. With snow and sleet occurring across northeast Arkansas, the Missouri boot-heel, and northwest Tennessee. Freezing rain will continue to fall through the Interstate 40 corridor into northwest Mississippi.

The National Weather Service and HottyToddy.com urge all mid-south residents to take precautions now in case of the loss of power due to downed power lines. Make sure flash lights have full batteries tonight, have access to plenty of blankets and warm clothing, and charge all electronic devices ahead of time.

OXFORD, MISS –The Oxford Police Department urges Oxford residents to drive cautiously this weekend as potentially hazardous winter weather is expected.

According to Oxford Emergency Management, on Friday, December 6, the City of Oxford will go under a Winter Weather Watch beginning at 12:00p.m. Friday, and ending at 9:00 p.m. the same day.

Temperatures are expected to drop to 32 degrees by 4 p.m. and citizens can expect from 1/10 inch up to 1⁄4 inch of freezing rain accumulations on elevated structures, power lines, and trees. There is a chance of freezing rain and sleet before midnight with gusts of wind.

There is a slight chance of rain, freezing rain, and sleet after noon on Saturday, December 7. Rain is likely at night with the continuing chance of freezing rain.

The Oxford Police Department advises Oxford residents to avoid driving if possible and use caution on potentially icy roads and bridges if you must travel. Stay alert and prepare for winter weather now.
