The Ole Miss Rebel football team opened spring practice for the 2015 season on Tuesday. Going into this new season, the Rebels have a competition for the starting quarterback position.
In the opening press conference coach Hugh Freeze opened with excitement for his fourth season leading the Rebels.
“I’m excited about another spring and getting ready for year four,” Freeze said. “I like what I see from our staff and our kids walking around the building right now. I think that there is an excitement.”
With Bo Wallace graduated from Ole Miss, it’s time for someone to step up into the quarterback position, and right now there is a three-man deal the staff will evaluate this spring.
“We are going to be very thorough in our evaluations by charting every single drill that they do. We will look at stats from those. It is going to be a very competitive three-man deal,” Freeze said. “They drew straws last night to decide who gets the first set of fours. I believe Ryan Buchanan won the draw.”
Each QB will get equal snaps this spring with the ones and twos on a constant rotation. The main thing the coaches want to see is who can handle hard coaching and who picks up the new things that are called.
“I am anxious to see them get out and compete,” Freeze said.
Going into spring practice, the Rebels will be without some guys, particularly on the offensive line. On other players, Laquon Treadwell will be back after spring break, but not pushing too hard this week. Robert Conyers will be back after spring break, but Daronte Bouldin and Laremy Tunsil will not participate in spring practice.
The football team will be in spring practice for 15 days and it will all culminate with the annual Regions Bank Grove Bowl April 11 with a noon kickoff.
