At the 2014 regular season close of the Ole Miss baseball season, the Rebels clinched the SEC’s western Division and the No. 2 seed in the SEC tournament in Hoover, Ala.
The hot-hitting club coached by Mike Bianco did this while winning their final SEC series against Texas A&M in College Station 2 games to 1.
Ole Miss (40-16, 19-11 SEC) enters the SEC tournament with one of the best lineups in the nation and two undefeated starting pitchers in a format where two starters is all you need.
Senior Will Allen leads the team in RBI’s and is up for the Howser Trophy. Teammate Austin Anderson is also up for the same award.
During a teleconference Monday morning, Bianco stated the Rebels need to focus on the SEC Tournament, “play well and hope for the best,” because that’s the only outcome in their control.
This season, the Ole Miss pitching staff has been dominant with Chris Ellis and Christian Trent both making it through the entire season undefeated. Sam Smith has been successful as well as the Sunday starter.
As the team looks ahead to taking the diamond on Wednesday to face the winner of Arkansas or Texas A&M, the Ole Miss starter has yet been determined.
A strong showing this week at the tourney should help the Rebels lock in a national seed for the NCAA Tourney.
“Week in, week out in the SEC you play great competition,” Bianco said.
The SEC is expected to place most of its teams into the field of 64.
“I would be shocked if less than 10 teams make it in — and I wouldn’t be shocked if 11 got in,” Bianco added.
The HottyToddy.com sports staff will be on hand at the tournament to bring our readers all the Ole Miss action. Their first game should start around noon.
