Hugh Freeze and the Ole Miss Rebels are already busy working on their 2014 recruiting class, less than a week after signing a 2013 recruiting class ranked No. 5 nationally per ESPN.

On Mardi Gras’ Fat Tuesday, the good news kept on rolling for the recruiting machine that is Ole Miss.

Running back D.K. Buford, the No. 1 running back in Mississippi and No. 142 overall prospect (rivals.com), gave the Rebels a strong verbal commitment on February 12 (blogs.clarionledger.com). The Oxford, MS native, attending Lafayette High School, chose the Rebels over in-state rival Mississippi State.

The 5’10”, 190-pound athlete has played both receiver and running back during his career at Lafayette High School. More than anything though, it’s Buford’s speed that stands out as he posted a 4.4 second 40-yard dash time (rivals.com). Hugh Freeze loves speedy athletes in his dynamic offensive system and D.K. Buford is a player that could see touches from several different positions for the Rebels.

Landing such an early ’14 verbal commitment from Mississippi’s No. 1 prospect should put other highly-rated prospects on notice that Hugh Freeze and Ole Miss are here to stay on the national recruiting scene.

In addition to the commitment from the state’s top prospect, Ole Miss already received earlier verbal commitments from Meridian, MS 4-star safety C.J. Hampton (No. 242 overall prospect per rivals.com), and Jackson, MS defensive back Ronald Walker.

In Buford and Hampton, Hugh Freeze has now received verbal commitments from twoRivals 250 prospects in the 2014 recruiting class, only days after officially signing his ’13 class.

It’s going to be very interesting to see what other top state and national prospects decide to give early verbal commitments to Ole Miss in 2013.

Keep an eye on the Rebels. Hugh Freeze has a master recruiting plan and he’s at it again.
