No. 11 Ole Miss Defeats Georgia 12-2
After a Sunday game with Arkansas last weekend in which the Rebels only scored one run, Ole Miss exploded offensively Friday night pounding the Georgia Bulldogs 12-2 in the opening game of the series.
No. 11 Ole Miss (36-14, 16-9 SEC) got key hits that manufactured 12 runs on the night.
Georgia took an early lead in the game by plating one run on a bases-loaded groundout.
“After we started scoring in the third, I thought we were going to score every inning, and it was a good night for us,” said Ole Miss Coach Mike Bianco.
Ole Miss starter Chris Ellis soon settled in and did not allow the Bulldogs to score any more runs until the top of the sixth when Georgia scored one run. Ellis moved to 8-0 on the year, after he worked 6.2 innings giving up two runs on six hits.
“After a tough first inning it was easier to find a groove and then the offense put up huge numbers behind me,” said Ellis.
The Rebels scored three runs in the third inning, starting the frame on a hit by freshman J.B. Woodman. Then Braxton Lee followed with a single of his own. The Southeastern Conference hits leader Auston Bousfield joined in the hitting barrage with a single.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Rebels added two more runs off of back-to-back RBI by Preston Overbey and Woodman, scoring Sikes Orvis and Errol Robinson.
Ole Miss hung up another three runs against the Bulldogs in the fifth inning. Also, three more in the sixth.
Coach Bianco brought in Matt Denny in the seventh to pitch for the Rebels.
The Rebels scored their 12th and last run in the eighth inning off of a Dalton Dulin fielder’s choice.
Game two in this series will be Saturday with the first pitch at 4 p.m.
