Mississippi River Stages Forecasted to Drop Despite Rain, Snow

Published

on

A winter storm passed over the Mississippi River and parts of Mississippi Jan. 21 and 22, but despite the rain and snow, the National Weather Service forecasted the high river stages to drop over the next few days.

The current river stage in Greenville, Mississippi is at 52.4 feet, which is lower compared to the 55.35 feet reported on Sunday, Jan. 17. The flood stage for Greenville is 48 feet. The weather service forecasted the river to drop at least another six feet by Wednesday, Jan. 27, which means it will drop to 46 feet.

The Mississippi River is strong and dangerous when its waters rise like it did after heavy rainfall in the early winter of 2015. Homes along Lake Ferguson, which opens to the river in Greenville, were flooded recently. Among the homes that flooded, city streets, parks and the levee were shut down, too.

Other areas to keep in mind are Memphis, which is currently not considered in the flood stage, Vicksburg and Natchez. Vicksburg flood stage is 43 feet, and it is currently at 48 feet, but forecasted to drop to at least 45 feet by Wednesday. The flood stage in Natchez is 48 feet, and it is currently at 56.2 feet, but forecasted to drop under 54 feet by Wednesday as well.

Here are some photos we collected from the Greenville area around Lake Ferguson.
