Memphis Defeats Ole Miss

The Rebels had a tough time at the park on Wednesday night, as they dropped their second game of the season by a score of 4-1 to Memphis.
Ole Miss (11-2) got a total of eleven runners on base, but they couldn’t get the key hit to plate a run until the bottom of the seventh.
Memphis was able to jump out to an early lead in the top of the first with two runs. Tigers centerfielder Darien Tubbs led the game off with a double to right center. Zach Willis followed the double with a walk. Both runners moved up a base on a double steal. Two batters later, Drew Griffin brought both of them home on a two-RBI single through the right side of the infield.
Coach Mike Bianco discussed how the Rebels played against the Tigers.
“We had some good at bats and some balls where well hit,” Bianco said. “They (Memphis) played some great defense tonight and some spectacular plays that I thought really won them the game.”
Ole Miss starter, Jeremy Massie (0-1), settled in and shut down Memphis in their next three frames. Massie worked a total of 4.1 innings, giving up three runs off of five hits. He struck out five of the Tigers and only allowed a single walk.
Then in the top of the fifth, Memphis added an additional run off of an RBI fielder’s choice by D. Tubbs to score Carter White from third. The Tigers tacked on their final run in the sixth.
Coach Bianco called on Cheyne Bickel, Aaron Greenwood and Preston Tarkington out of the bullpen in relief of Massie. Bickel was the only other pitcher to give a run.
Ole Miss finally scratched out a run. Auston Bousfield led the bottom of the seventh off with a double to the left field wall. Then Will Allen brought Bousfield home with an RBI sac fly to center field. Allen put up his 19th RBI of the season.
Bousfield talked about how the Rebels where hitting the ball throughout the game.
“For seven innings in a row we had runners on base and I thought we hit some balls hard we just could not get them to fall,” Bousfield said.
Bousfield was a home run shy of hitting for the cycle. He went three-for-four at the plate, with a single, double and a triple with one run scored. He also got aboard on a walk giving up by the Tigers pitcher Caleb Wallingford.
The Rebels return to the field on Friday night, hosting Arkansas Little-Rock. First pitch of this three-game series is set for 6:30 p.m.
