Lady Rebels Tennis Host VCU Wednesday
The Ole Miss women’s tennis team will step out of conference play for a mid-week match against VCU Wednesday at Noon at the Palmer/Salloum Tennis Center. Following Wednesday’s match, the Rebels will get back into SEC play hosting No. 7 Vanderbilt Friday at 3 p.m., and No. 22 Kentucky Sunday at Noon.
Wednesday’s match is International Student Day. Students will receive an Ole Miss Tumbler cup, while supplies last.
The Rebels enter the match at 6-4 overall. They are coming off a split of last weekend’s matches, defeating Tennessee 5-2 before falling to No. 11 Georgia 5-2. The win against Tennessee marked the third straight victory against the Lady Vols in Oxford.
Caroline Rohde-Moe won her 80th career singles match in the win over Tennessee, and freshman Zalina Khairudinova beat 55th-ranked Eve Repic of Tennessee, for her first nationally ranked win of her career. Julia Jones and Khairudinova lost just their second match of the year in the loss to Georgia, but are 10-2 overall, 3-1 in the SEC.
“We have three big matches in five days,” head coach Mark Beyers said. “VCU is a very talented team which has been ranked as high as No. 39 this year. Vanderbilt and Kentucky are both very good teams ranked in the top 25. This week will be a challenge for us, but after these last two weeks of SEC competition, I feel the team is ready for these types of matches.”
VCU enters Wednesday’s match at 7-6 on the year. The Rams began January ranked No. 39 but after four losses to nationally-ranked teams and a defeat to unranked Wake Forest, VCU has yet to return to the top 75. VCU is coming off a 4-0 loss at No. 27 Memphis on Monday. The Rams have two nationally-ranked players in No. 73 Cindy Chala (19-3) and No. 115 Yukako Noi (14-8).
Admission to all home matches is free.
