School-Record 13 Rebels Earn All-America Honors

Ole Miss sent 13 athletes to Eugene, Oregon, last week for the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, and all 13 came away with All-America honors as announced Monday by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
The total of 13 All-Americans breaks last year’s previous school record of nine.
The USTFCCCA awards first team All-America status to those athletes who finish 1-8 in their events at the national finals, while those who place 9-16 earn second-team accolades.
The Rebels’ six first team All-Americans are their most top-eight finishers since 1993, when they had seven.
Ole Miss now has 169 All-America selections among 80 different athletes in program history.
Here is a breakdown of the 2016 Ole Miss outdoor All-Americans:
First Team All-Americans
- Raven Saunders – NCAA Champion women’s shot put – 19.33m/63-5 (collegiate record, meet record, school record)
- Robert Domanic – 6th place men’s 1500m – 3:41.71
- Craig Engels – 7th place men’s 1500m – 3:43.23
- Ryan Walling – 7th place men’s 5000m – 13:31.30 (school record)
- MJ Erb – 8th place men’s 3000m steeplechase – 8:43.81
- Dempsey McGuigan – 8th place men’s hammer throw – 69.23m/227-1
Second Team All-Americans
- Holland Sherrer – 10th place men’s 800m – 1:47.34
- Branden Greene – 11th place men’s high jump – 2.14m/7-0.25
- Lindsey Murray – T-15th place women’s pole vault – 4.05m/13-3.5
- Nicole Henderson – 16th place women’s 4x100m relay – 44.56
- Shannon Ray – 16th place women’s 4x100m relay – 44.56
- Khadijah Suleman – 16th place women’s 4x100m relay – 44.56
- Breanna Tate – 16th place women’s 4x100m relay – 44.56
Those who earned outdoor All-America honors for the first time in their careers are Erb, McGuigan, Murray, Sherrer, Tate and Walling.
Saunders is the first Rebel woman to be an All-American in the shot put. Domanic and Engels are the first two All-Americans in school history in the 1500 meters. McGuigan is the first All-American in the hammer throw. Murray is the first Ole Miss woman to be an All-American in the pole vault.
In the first year of the Connie Price-Smith era of Ole Miss Track & Field, the Rebels accumulate a total of 19 All-America honors – 13 outdoor and six indoor. The school record-tying six indoor All-Americans were Domanic, Engels, Derek Gutierrez, Saunders, Sean Tobin and Walling.

Predicting the SEC’s 3,000-yard passers in 2016

The quarterback play in the SEC hasn’t been great the past few seasons, and that trend seems likely to continue in 2016.
However, there are a few well-known names at the top of the conference who should be in line for a big year, and you never know if a young player will come out of nowhere and put up huge numbers.
Who will join the likes of recent SEC greats like Texas A&M’s Johnny Manziel and Georgia’s Aaron Murray and pass for more than 3,000 yards this fall? Let’s take a look some possibilities:
Chad Kelly, Ole Miss
After piling up the third most yards in SEC history — including 4,042 passing yards — in his first year in the SEC, there’s no reason to think Kelly will do anything differently in 2016. The league’s top returning quarterback fits perfectly into coach Hugh Freeze’s offense, and despite the Rebels losing some valuable pieces this offseason — Laquon Treadwell and Laremy Tunsil, most notably —ƒ there are still plenty of playmakers around Kelly, which point toward another big offensive season for him.
With Damore’ea Stringfellow, Evan Engram, Quincy Adeboyejo and Markell Pack all back as proven SEC pass-catchers, plus Demarkus Lodge, Van Jefferson, A.J. Brown and D.K. Metcalf looking to make their mark in the conference, the options for Kelly are abundant. Throw in the fact that Ole Miss has the deepest running back talent it has had under Freeze, allowing the Rebels to showcase a balanced attack, and Kelly should have little trouble reaching this mark.
