Chad Kelly and Rebels working hard in offseason for continued success

During practices thus far this spring, Chad Kelly continues to lead his team in both his words and actions, and the Ole Miss senior quarterback hopes everyone else feeds off his energy and vision.

When Kelly and the Rebels returned to practice this week—following Kelly’s mission work in Haiti with other members of the Ole Miss team and staff—the quarterback joked and laughed with some of the offensive linemen while stretching for the first 15 minutes.

Then it was time to get down to business and orchestrate some plays with the familiar faces on the team as well as the new kids on the block.

After each whistle blew, Kelly quickly strapped up his helmet and went into the huddle, demanding everyone’s attention to “win the day,” a phrase head football coach Hugh Freeze has drilled into his players since the coach’s arrival in Oxford late 2011.

Chad Kelly obviously understands the phrase. His commitment and drive earned the respect of his offensive teammates and helped lead them to last year’s Sugar Bowl winning season. His command is even better this season, compared to his first year in Oxford. He calls it ‘a better understanding’ of what the coaching staff expects out of him and the offense each time they step onto the field.

Former Ole Miss WR Laquon Treadwell plans super surprise at his football camp

For the past three years, Laquon Treadwell has been the face of Ole Miss football.

From the insane touchdowns catches to his beaming smile roaming the sidelines to his devastating leg injury during his sophomore season, Treadwell has been a fan favorite in Oxford, Miss., and across the state.

With less than a month to go before the 2016 NFL Draft, the former Rebels’ wide receiver will be hosting his first football camp for kids ages 6 to 16 in Oxford, and it comes with a bit of a feel-good twist. Treadwell has decided to forego compensation and instead he will instead put that money toward providing 55 scholarships to low income and underprivileged players, according to Davis Potter of the Oxford Eagle.

Treadwell will be in charge of the wide receivers station and will end the four-hour camp with a talk to the 200 campers about the importance of making good grades and choosing the right role models.

The 6-foot-2, 221-pounder is projected to be selected in the first round of the NFL draft. He ended his Ole Miss career with 12 school records, including the most receiving yards in a season (1,153), most touchdown catches in a season (11) and most catches in a career (202).

Rebels Push Back the Tide

In just her second dual match in singles, freshman Allie Sanford delivered the Ole Miss women’s tennis team a much-needed 5-2 win at Alabama Thursday night.

They tried to play the match outdoors, but that didn’t last long as rain came again, forcing the conclusion of doubles and all of singles indoors.

With the Rebels leading 3-2 and senior Mai El Kamash trying to get to a third set at No. 3 singles, Sanford closed out Bama’s Bennett Dunn 6-3, 6-3 at No. 6 singles. Sanford led 6-3, 5-3 and avoided having to serve it out by breaking Dunn’s serve to end the Rebels four-match losing streak in SEC play.

The Rebels earned wins on courts one and two in doubles to claim the early 1-0 lead. Freshman Tea Jandric made quick work of the Crimson Tide’s Joanna Nena Savva 6-1, 6-0 on court four to give the Rebels a 2-0 lead.

After Alabama tied it up with wins on courts two and five, 37th-ranked Arianne Hartono finished off a straight set win (6-3, 6-4) against 44th-ranked Erin Routliffe at No. 1 singles to put Ole Miss up 3-2.

Notables…
• The Rebels are now 9-5 overall and 2-5 in the SEC. They travel to face No. 15 Auburn Sunday at 1 p.m.
• The Rebels snapped a five-match losing streak to Alabama and picked up their first win in Tuscaloosa since 2010.
• The Rebels are a combined 22-11 at the top of the lineup.
• Arianne Hartono improved to 16-8 overall and 9-2 at No. 1 singles. She is now 3-2 in the SEC.
• Freshman Allie Sanford clinched her first career win in only her second dual match in singles.
• Tea Jandric snapped a three-match losing streak and improved to 7-3 at No. 4 singles.

“It’s always good to get a road win in the SEC. This was a hard-fought battle against a solid Alabama team. We were able to capture the doubles point and then take three first sets in singles. It was nice to get a quick point on the board from Tea, and then a great job of closing out matches by Ari and Allie Sanford. Mai did an excellent job of extending her match and eventually turning the momentum and getting the W in a super breaker.”

Kiffin loses ‘Number Five’ but Has Five Guys In Line

Robert Nkemdiche‘s status as a potential first round draft pick has become cloudy but his defection from the Ole Miss football program is still heavily felt. While his talent

versus trouble and the pros and cons can be debated, his versatility on the field cannot be. Even beyond the loss of the former number one recruit. the Chris Kiffin‘s unit will be void of two senior leaders who’s presence was certainly felt in recent years.

Woodrow Hamilton was a stalwart on the defensive live, playing in 47 games over the course of his career. Meanwhile, Channing Ward contributed early and often on special teams during his time in Oxford. Ward finished the 2015 season with 35 tackles, six and half tackles for loss and three sacks.

Really, the retooling of the Reb defensive line began after the Sugar Bowl, as Nkemdiche missed the game, but this Spring is the first glimpse of just where the unit is at.
