Ole Miss Volleyball’s Cara Fisher Named SEC Defensive Player of the Week

Cara Fisher

Cara Fisher

Following an outstanding performance to help lead the Ole Miss Volleyball team to the Buffalo Classic title last weekend, senior Cara Fisher was named the SEC Defensive Player of the Week, as announced Tuesday by the league office.
The Manvel, Texas native, paved the way for setter Aubrey Edie, right side hitter Melanie Crow and middle blocker Nakeyta Clair to earn All-Tournament Team honors at the Buffalo Classic, as the Rebels captured their first tournament title away from Oxford since 2007 and started the year 4-0 for the first time since 2007.
Fisher only had four receiving errors in four matches, including none against Lehigh and Buffalo. She finished with double-digit digs in all four matches, including a career-high 20 in the championship match against Buffalo.
The Rebels are back in action this weekend at the Memphis Invitational. The team’s first match is Friday against Memphis at 7 p.m.

Looking to maintain momentum from a successful opening tournament in Buffalo, New York, the Ole Miss Volleyball team heads to Memphis, Tennessee, this weekend for the Memphis Invitational. The Rebels will face three teams in the two-day tournament.
Ole Miss (4-0) will face Memphis in the first match Friday at 7 p.m. at the Elma Roane Field House. On Saturday, the Rebels will play Arkansas State at 10 a.m. followed by UT-Martin at 4 p.m., to conclude the tournament.
“Memphis took Alabama to five sets this past weekend,” said head coach Steven McRoberts on facing a little tougher competition this weekend. “The competition this weekend will be a notch up from what we just played. The teams that we’ve played will be in the 20-win area once they get to their conference. The wins over Buffalo and Lehigh will be good RPI wins for our program.”
NOTING THE REBELS … • The Rebels kicked off the 2014 season this past weekend, capturing the Buffalo Classic in Buffalo, New York. Ole Miss defeated Canisius, Siena, Lehigh and Buffalo all by a score of 3-0. • Junior Nakeyta Clair and sophomores Aubrey Edie and Melanie Crow were named to the All-Tournament Team, while Clair earned Most Valuable Player honors. • The Rebels are 4-0 to start the year for the first time since the 2007 season. It’s also the first time since 1984 the Rebels have won their first four matches without dropping a set. • Senior Cara Fisher was named the SEC Defensive Player of the Week.

Ole Miss Hosts Minnesota, Memphis In Rebel Classic
The Ole Miss Soccer team will host the Rebel Classic this weekend as the Rebels welcome Auburn, Memphis and Minnesota to campus at the University of Mississippi for the weekend event. It’s the first time in the program’s history for Ole Miss to host a regular-season tournament in soccer.
The Rebels take to the field at 7 p.m. Friday night against the Minnesota Golden Gophers before facing the Memphis Tigers at 7 p.m. on Sunday evening. Admission to all matches is free and both Rebel contests will be broadcast on the SEC Network + digital platform.

  • Ole Miss (2-1-1) enters the weekend coming off a 5-1 win over Louisiana-Lafayette last weekend behind a hat trick from sophomore Addie Forbus and a pair of goals from junior Jessica Hiskey.
  • The hat trick for Forbus was the first of her career and is the first for a player in the Southeastern Conference this season. Forbus tallied eight points in the game against the Ragin’ Cajuns as she also added a pair of assists.
  • The Rebels are 0-1 all-time against Minnesota and are 9-6-1 all-time against Memphis heading into the weekend matches.
  • The tournament marks a first for Ole Miss which will be hosting a regular-season event of this type for the first time in the 20-year history of the program. Auburn will also be competing in the four-match event along with Memphis and Minnesota, though the Rebels and Tigers will not face each other.
  • Minnesota (3-1-0) enters the weekend with its lone loss coming on the road at Florida State in the opening weekend of play by a score of 4-1. In its three wins, the Golden Gophers have shutout each opponent while tallying 13 total goals.
  • Memphis (1-1-1) enters the weekend with a pair of matches against SEC teams already under its belt after beating Alabama on the road and falling to Vanderbilt at home in Memphis. The tie for the Tigers came at home against Lipscomb.
