Grants Available For Heritage and Culture Preservation

The Mississippi Hills Area Alliance sponsored two public workshops on December 17 at the Oxford Conference Center.

The workshop was held to inform other non-profits and heritage organizations about grants that will be available to them for the future.

“Grants available include transportation grants up to $1,000 for school field trips; flash grants up to $2,500 for local cultural and heritage projects,” a press release from MHNHA said. “Small cap grants up to $5,000 and large cap grants up to $20,000 for larger community or regional initiatives (are also available”).

The alliance works with the Mississippi Hills National Heritage Area. Created in 2009 by the United States Congress, MHNHA works to highlight the heritage and culture of Northern Mississippi. It covers 19 full counties and the edges of 11 counties.

“We really like to potential of this program and feel like it can make a real difference by providing funds to all types of cultural and heritage endeavors,” Mississippi Hills Heritage Area Alliance President, Neal McCoy said. “We have established a $150,000 grant fun in this year’s budget and we hope to see it fully disbursed.”

The grants are available to non-profit organizations, school groups, museums, cultural and heritage events, federally recognized Indian tribes, attractions, partnerships, programs and presentations and all good standing members of the Mississippi Hills Heritage Area Alliance, according to the alliance.

“Once the applications become interactive and can be completed, those applying may submit email questions about the process and we will provide an answer as quickly as possible,” McCoy said. “Feb. 1, 2016, is the submission deadline and grant awards will be announced March 15, 2016.”
