The Oxford Film Festival (OFF) will host a screening of “The Attack of the Southern Fried Zombies,” formerly titled “Kudzu Zombies,” at The Growler on Sunday, December 17. The screening begins at 6 p.m., but the doors open for beer and socializing at 4 p.m.
Southern Prohibition beer will be sold as a fundraiser for the OFF. Attendees will also get a preview of the upcoming February festival, which takes place Feb. 7-11, 2018.
In “Southern Fried Zombies,” Lonnie, a crop-duster pilot, must lead a mismatched group of survivors to escape a deadly horde of zombies after an experimental chemical, intended to control the invasive kudzu vine, transforms the citizens of Charleston, Miss. into zombies.
Directed by Mark Newton, “Southern Fried Zombies” was shot in 2016 in Mississippi and had its world premiere at the Oxford Film Festival last February. The film, which features some Oxford actors, was bought by Gravitas Ventures and will have a worldwide release in March. Locals will get a chance to see the final film before the release.
“Southern Fried Zombies” was named “Goriest Film” at the Fantastic Horror Film Festival in San Diego. It “has a great southern vibe and gives a unique twist to the zombie film genre, with a little ‘Zombieland’ and ‘Shaun of the Dead’ in the mix,” Joshua Spector, director of acquisitions for Gravitas Ventures, told Variety. “Plus, there’s a zombie horde, carnival mayhem, Southern rock and mad scientists. It’s a fun ride!”
Attendees of Sunday’s screening can enjoy beer from 4-6 p.m., and proceeds from the sales will go towards the festival. The film will be screened from 6-8 pm.
The fundraiser serves as part of the month-long Seed&Spark campaign to raise the last $8,000 in funds needed for the 2018 Oxford Film Festival.
The Oxford Film Festival was founded in 2003 to bring exciting, new and unusual films (and the people who create them) to North Mississippi. The annual five-day festival screens short and feature-length films in both showcase and competition settings, including narrative and documentary features and shorts; Mississippi narratives, documentaries and music videos, and narrative, documentary, animated and experimental shorts. The festival is a 501c3 not-for- profit organization.
