Considering way goofy games have shown up, Rebels just need to win

Nobody needs to get hung up on style points in Ole Miss’ game against Georgia Southern … only wins matter.

OXFORD, Miss. — Let’s not get too hung up on a margin of victory in Ole Miss’ game tonight against Georgia Southern. The Rebels don’t want to be anything of a surprise.

Considering the goofiness of college football this year, just getting a win should be enough. Let Lane Kiffin and his coaching staff deal with how pretty it is.

Style points aren’t as big of a deal now with 14 teams in the College Football Playoff. It also means nothing to help reach the SEC Championship Game. Ole Miss hasn’t been there and the old joke the Rebels can’t go without a ticket is getting old.

Quarterback Jaxson Dart is having to deal with an increasing swirl of his name being brought up every time the Heisman Trophy is mentioned. None of that matters at this point.

All that really matters is getting wins. All of that other stuff will take care of itself.

In a way, the Eagles can be somewhat of a trap game. Kiffin knows Georgia Southern coach Clay Helton fairly well, being referred to him years ago by his dad, Monte Kiffin.

They probably have more in common than each getting fired at USC, but Kiffin does have better players. More of them, too. That’s what usually makes the biggest difference.

Now fans just have to get on board. The party atmosphere at The Grove started hours ago and it should be a bunch of fans in a great attitude by the time the game kicks off at 6:45 p.m. on the SEC Network.

Some will get a win means more than how they got it. In November when we’re all looking at these games, nobody will remember an awful lot of the details.

All that matters then is whether it’s a W or an L.
