The Oxford Chargers open the 2018 regular season Friday night versus Warren Central in the “Red Carpet Bowl” at Vicksburg High School. Kickoff is slated for 5:30 p.m.
Last week, Oxford hit Bobby Holcomb field in the annual jamboree to conclude fall camp. The Chargers defeated Charleston 7-0.
“We played well defensively,” Oxford High School head coach Chris Cutcliffe said. “The number one thing across the board is we played well in all three phases of the game.”
Offensively the Chargers got off to a slow start with a few penalties, but they finished strong, Cutcliffe said.
Warren Central was tough competition, as they defeated an undefeated Tupelo in the first round of the playoffs last season.
“Warren Central is a really good and talented team…extremely well coached,” Cutcliffe said. “The team has had a lot of success playing in a lot of big games, so we know it’s a big challenge to open the season.”
On defense, the Chargers return three starters from the 2017 season. Two helped anchor the defensive line, Cutcliffe said.
“I think those guys LaMarcus Faulkner and Jamie White on the D-line and Dude Person at linebacker have been what you want to see in returning starters,” he said.
