This morning, Phil Bryant, Governor of Mississippi, sent out a statement regarding the possibility of Syrian refugees being brought to Mississippi.
The Governor’s post on Facebook today, which has reached popularity with almost 20,000 people:
“My statement below regarding Syrian refugees.
I’m currently working with the Mississippi Department of Public Safety and Mississippi Office of Homeland Security to determine the current status of any Syrian refugees that may be brought to our state in the near future. I will do everything humanly possible to stop any plans from the Obama administration to put Syrian refugees in Mississippi. The policy of bringing these individuals into the country is not only misguided, it is extremely dangerous. I’ll be notifying President Obama of my decision today to resist this potential action.”
States in Agreement
Gov. Byrant’s statement comes after a rumor that 10,000 Syrian refugees were already in New Orleans, Louisiana. The rumor sparked after the terrorist group, ISIS, attacked multiple places in Paris, France last Friday. There were at least 129 people killed and 352 wounded, according to The New York Times.
Other states from across the country, such as Michigan and Alabama, are joining with Gov. Bryant to see that no Syrian refugees enter into their territory. The governors of these states, and of Mississippi, feel the presence of Syrian refugees in the United States is too dangerous and puts America in a dangerous position as well.
The Refugee Plan
President Obama and his administration are in talks to bring at least 10,000 refugees to the United States in the next fiscal year. According to The Times-Picayune, a New Orleans based newspaper, there are only 14 people from Syria that have entered Louisiana so far. Syrians are fleeing from their country to get away from the terrorist group that threatens them.
Statement from President Obama
The White House released a statement from President Obama on Friday in regards to the Paris attacks.
“This is a heartbreaking situation. And obviously those of us here in the United States know what it’s like. We’ve gone through these kinds of episodes ourselves,” President Obama said, “and whenever these kinds of attacks happened, we’ve always been able to count on the French people to stand with us. They have been an extraordinary counterterrorism partner, and we intend to be there with them in that same fashion.”
