One of the greatest soft rock groups of all time, Bread, is one of those groups whose music never loses its listening enjoyment. For those of us who were either not around in the ’70s or cannot recall the decade for whatever reason, you might want to do yourself a Christmas favor this year by introducing your friends and family members to Bread.
Earlier this year a book was released entitled “Bread: A Sweet Surrender.” How the group came up with its name is also most unique as they were stuck in traffic one day behind a Wonder Bread truck.
Bread placed 13 songs in the BillBoard Hot 100 between 1970 and 77. Some of these classic hits included “Make It With You” (No. 1 July, 1970); “It Don’t Matter To Me” (No. 10 October, 1970); “Baby I’m-A Want You” (No. 3 November, 1971); “Everything I Own” (my personal favorite, No. 5 February, 1972); and “The Guitar Man” (August, 1972).
Unfortunately three of the five original members are now deceased. The lead singer David Ashworth Gates is one of the two surviving of the group. Bread was inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2006. Their debut album premiered in 1969. They performed for the last time in 1997 with the original band.
What makes the 60’s and 70’s so special are groups like Bread who found their own special niche sound. If you take the time to listen this Christmas season, you’ll be hooked forever. Even without meat and potatoes, Bread is a dish served perfectly well all by itself.
