After leading the Ole Miss football team to a 7-2 record and top-15 national ranking, senior quarterback Bo Wallace was named as one of 16 semifinalists for the 2014 Davey O’Brien Award, the award committee announced Tuesday. The Davey O’Brien Award is presented annually to the nation’s best college quarterback, and is the oldest and most prestigious national quarterback award.
Wallace has been a true leader for the Rebels throughout the 2014 season, and is on pace to set Ole Miss single-season records in pass efficiency, yards per attempt and 300-yard games, in addition to challenging for several other records. A semifinalist for the Maxwell Award, Wallace has thrown just one interception in six Southeastern Conference games, which is the fewest among starting quarterbacks in the league. In fact, since the second half of the Rebels’ season opener against Boise State, Wallace has thrown 19 touchdown passes versus just four interceptions.
The Pulaski, Tennessee, native has had a propensity to rise to the occasion in the second half of games this year. Wallace has completed 66.4 percent (73-110) of his passes in the second half of games, accumulating 1,039 yards, 11 touchdowns and just one interception. In the fourth quarter alone, Wallace has completed 63.6 percent (35-55) of his passes for 532 yards, six touchdowns and one interception.
Standing at 6-foot-4, 217 pounds, Wallace led Ole Miss to its first 7-0 start this season since 1962, and its highest ranking (No. 3) since 1964. He ranks third in the SEC and in the top 30 nationally in passing (268.4 yards per game), total offense (293.2 ypg) and points responsible for (138).
Wallace was one of nine seniors selected as a semifinalist, joining five juniors, one sophomore and one freshman. A full list of the semifinalists is below.
The Davey O’Brien Foundation and the selection committee will release the names of the three finalists on Nov. 24. The 2014 Davey O’Brien winner will be announced live on The Home Depot College Football Awards on Dec. 11 on ESPN, and will be honored at the 38th Annual Davey O’Brien Awards Dinner on Feb. 16, 2015, in Fort Worth.
The award is overseen by the Davey O’Brien Foundation, which is headquartered in Fort Worth, Texas, and has given away more than $900,000 in scholarships and university grants to help high school and college athletes transform leadership on the field into leadership in life.
