A Look Ahead At the TCU Horned Frogs

Published

on

The Ole Miss Rebels will take on the TCU Horned Frogs on Thursday evening at 7 p.m. on ESPN to avoid elimination from the College World Series.
Ole Miss (47-20) defeated the Texas Tech Red Raiders on Tuesday 2-1 in walk-off fashion as senior John Gatlin came through with a clutch hit to center.
The Rebels took the lead in the game in the bottom of the seventh as Holt Perdzock delivered an RBI single to plate the first run of the game for Ole Miss.
Then in the ninth inning, the Red Raiders tied the game with a sacrifice fly to right scoring the runner from third base.
In the past two games in Omaha, the Rebs have scored a total of three runs on three RBI. All of the RBI have come from bench players.
In Tuesday’s game, the Ole Miss lineup hit the ball hard — usually right at the opposition.

No. 7 TCU and No. 3 Virginia battled fiercely Wednesday night as the last two national seeds in the CWS. Virginia got things started early scoring first in the bottom of the first. The Horned Frogs answered with two of their own in the second.
The Cavaliers knotted the score at 2 apiece in the fifth. That was status quo until the bottom of the 15th inning when Virginia broke through with a lead-off double before winning on a sac fly.
After the fifth inning, neither team could get a runner past second base. Each team’s pitching and defense shined as it has throughout the tournament.
This season the Horned Frogs have experienced four long extra-inning games with a 3-1 record. In a press conference after the game, TCU Coach Jimmy Schiossnagle said a team strength is bouncing back after long emotional games.
The Horned Frogs began the 2014 baseball season with a bit of a rocky start, but in April the team turned the season around by winning 33 of their last 37 games.
The Horned Frogs are led at the plate this season by Garrett Crain who is hitting .330, while teammate Dylan Fitzgerald is right behind with a .311 batting average and 75 hits on the season.
As a club they’re hitting .279.
TCU and Ole Miss are no strangers on the diamond. Back in the 2012 regional in College Station, Texas, Ole Miss defeated the Horned Frogs in game one, but lost to TCU twice in the championship games. The next season, the Rebels opened their schedule against TCU and swept the Horned Frogs on the road.
A victory over TCU would mean a rematch for the Rebels with game one opponent the Virginia Cavaliers. Ole Miss would need two wins against the powerful Cavaliers to advance to the championship series.
