Oxford High Named One of America's Best, Only Miss. School on List

Oxford High School has been named one of America’s Top High Schools in Newsweek Magazine’s 2014 High School Rankings. Ranked 452 out of 500 high schools in the national rankings, Oxford High is the only Mississippi school on Newsweek’s list for academic excellence.

Newsweek’s High School Rankings have long served as a guide for parents and students to identify the schools that do the best job of preparing students for college. This year, Newsweek’s methodology is more stringent with new measures of quality and a high standard for data.
Oxford High School landed on the national high school ranking this year for: – a college readiness score of 70.44. – 83.32 percent of students who are college bound. – serving a student population level that falls 40.8 percent in the overall national poverty rate.
“Our students, parents and teachers are the real heroes in this national recognition story spotlighting our school’s academic excellence,” Oxford High School Principal Mike Martin said. “Thanks, appreciation and honor go to those who have set the academic bar high while going way above it. Daily, we see the commitment that that our teachers, staff, school and district administration make in preparing our students to learn as 21st century students.”
Newsweek’s High School Rankings base the list of top high schools in that nation indicators such as each school’s enrollment rate, graduation rate, Advanced Placement tests, SAT and ACT composite scores, student proficiency rates on state standardized tests, and how much change in student enrollment occurs between ninth and 12th grades.
“Our mission is to promote academic excellence for our students, and Newsweek’s high school ranking is one example of how this mission is being fulfilled daily at Oxford High School as we prepare our students to be ready for college or for a career upon graduation,” said Martin.
Oxford School District Superintendent Brian Harvey added, “What an honor for Oxford High School to earn this national recognition again for academic achievement. The ranking shows we are serious about the quality of education for our students. We want to prepare our students to be college- or career-ready. We want our students to be prepared for college or career experiences, confidently knowing the 21st century world is theirs.”
Newsweek partnered with Westat to produce the 2014 Newsweek High School Rankings. Westat is a 100 percent employee-owned research firm headquartered in Rockville, Maryland.
