Express Computer Service: A Decade of Technical Assistance

Published

on

Nestled between Big Bowl and Pak Mail is a decade-old computer repair shop: Express Computer Service.
Its age in tech repair is reflected in its expertise. Local publications have voted Express as the No. 1 computer shop in Oxford. Its owner and operator, Kyle McGrevey, opened the shop to meet the demand he encountered as a student worker at University of Mississippi.
“Back when I worked for the university, a lot of people came in with computer troubles,” McGrevey said. “I started giving out my number because I knew computer repairing and saw there was a business in this service.”
Express began on the Square on April of 2004 and moved four times, even once residing in Lyric. It recently relocated this past January from where Cups currently resides. McGrevey enjoys the new “doubled space,” and even has a space filled with leather couches and an arcade game of “X-Men vs. Street Fighter.” Here is a video of the new space layout as well as Callie Daniels, HottyToddy’s reporter, trying out the arcade game:

Kyle McGrevey is seen in a blue shirt taking on the lunch crowd of customers in the video above. Despite the sizable lunch crowd this afternoon McGrevey said last week was the “busiest week” he faced in the past 10 years. During the interview McGrevey took breaks to meet the customers or ask an employee for a certain item. He works just as quickly as he speaks as he directs the customers to register their impaired devices.
The customers can input their issues on any of three computers available by the entrance. For those who are unable or unwilling to come to the Express shop can request an appointment for the Express’ staff members to arrive and do on-site repairing to damaged computers at a flat, hourly rate. Express can also help set up networking for business computers and at-home computers.
Testimonials on Express’s service range from Michael Oher to Ace Atkins. McGrevey described his usual array of customers: anybody.
“Everyone has a computer nowadays from businesses to students to even housewives,” McGrevey said. “There will always be service here.”
Express has a six member staff that can repair both desktop and laptop PCs and Macs physically as well as removing viruses. It can repair iPhones and other smartphones too. Customers may bring in their damaged computer or smartphones for a free diagnosis and an upfront pricing. The services cost are custom and unique to each repair but Express also can do price-matching to similar services and product orderings.
“We also build custom computers,” McGrevey said. “Our primary clients for custom-made computers are the gamers. We recently made a desktop for a female gamer and it was transparent pink with blue lighting inside.”
McGrevey pulled out his smartphone and showed the picture of the finished product glowing brightly in the phone’s screen.
Express’s new space featured numerous manufacturers’ parts for Dell, Acer and HP and Mac. There are even parts for computer customization. The store is also available as an outlet for special orders.
