Ole Miss: The Black Perspective

Students in Dr. Mark K. Dolan’s media history class this fall produced multimedia pieces focusing on those voices which are different from their own, voices seldom heard, but that are part of the University’s campus identity. The goal was to have students interview a person unlike themselves in some fundamental way and to give that person a voice through multimedia storytelling, creating their own first draft of history, as journalists before them, and with an eye towards diversity.

In this third of four multimedia videos, Ole Miss: The Black Perspective, Ole Miss student Ann-Marie Herod takes a look at the University of Mississippi campus through the eyes of African-Americans, offering a perspective that stands in contrast to that of the majority of Ole Miss students.

“Many people often speak on how they think minorities feel at the University, so I went to the source,” Herod says of subject –– junior Honors College student Tim Abram. “Tim gives us his opinion on the University as not only an African American but as a male as well. He loves Ole Miss but does understand that some things here make African Americans feel uneasy and also reflects on what can be done to improve our University.”
