Moving days are hectic. Crowds can be hectic. Combined is what University of Mississippi endured this past week.
The Student Housing Department hosted its third annual Groovin’ at Move In. Hundreds of volunteers from several organizations from Greek to volunteer to academic helped incoming freshmen and their parents move in the dorms.

Britany Cavett volunteered on behalf of Delta Sigma Theta.
Cavett said, “I help them move some things in, and I keep watch of any piles left behind to make sure they’re not damaged or stolen.”
She was outside for a couple of hours, and she felt the heat keenly.
Delta Sigma Theta was not alone in volunteering. All Greek sororities and fraternities also helped, as well as Honors College, Theater, and The Well. Provost scholars helped as well as Campus Recreation student staff.

Dianne Rittendale waited outside Crosby Hall with Abby, beloved family pet. Rittendale jokes that they couldn’t leave home without her, it wasn’t even an option. Her daughter is Samantha Rittendale, a freshman. The family is from St. Louis, MO. Rittendale said her daughter went to a small high school so she wanted to find a good-sized campus.
“She has always loved the South,” she said, “and this was to her the best campus. She said it’s not too big but not too small either.”

Davina Cain, a Residential Housing Association member, arranged sign-ins and information pamphlets for the incoming underclassmen and their parents at Stockard Hall. She explained the halls had certain floors scheduled on different days.
Cain said, “We don’t want long lines in front of the elevators so it’s easier to have two to three floors moved in and settled down in a day than to move in all at once.”
