The Oxford Fringe Festival coming up Aug. 1-2, is a two-day arts festival with something for everyone.
From classical pianist performances to improvisation comedy shows to slam poetry to workshops and demonstrations to visual art spaces, your mind and creativity will be engaged.
There are two ways to go to the Festival: No. 1 is to just come and explore. Hang around your favorite art venues (the Powerhouse, the Courthouse Lawn, Southside, the University Museum and MORE!) and see what happens. No. 2, purchase a $5 schedule and map and plan out your course.
More than half of the festival is completely free to attend. That includes workshops, film viewings, story telling, performances and musical guests.
The other part of the festival requires tickets. A few events require specific tickets (Lacey Roop slam poet, all of the food and tasting events, workshop/performance bundles), but the rest of the great events only require a $5 general admission ticket.
This means you can go ahead, purchase your tickets online and decide what you feel like doing during the Festival. No need to exchange tickets or line up certain tickets with certain performances.
Tickets will be available at the door to most venues, but since several of the venues are small and intimate, seating is limited. Pre-purchased ticket holders should make sure to arrive on time with tickets in hand.
There are more than 80 art experiences to be had within 36 hours — that’s a compelling reason to purchase a schedule.
Ticket sales go directly back to the artists who are performing. “The Arts Council aims to support our artists in as many ways as possible and this Fringe Festival is a great way for us to support as many artists at one time as we can,” explained Stacey Sanford of the Arts Council.
Sales from the Festival schedule and map go towards next year’s festival. “We would love to see this program grow each year, but that is only possible with support from the sale of the maps — and between you and me, a $5 schedule to get you to 38 free events is really an incredible deal!” Sanford added.
Tickets, schedule, and some events are listed on the Art-er Limits website: www.OxfordFringeFest.com
For those who purchase schedules, they will be emailed out closer to the Festival date. Last-minute performances and visual artists are still being added.
There is a list of artists on the on the OxfordFringeFest.com website of all of the performers (without times/locations). Organizers suggest that if there is someone you really want to see, try Facebook stalking that artist for more information. Each performer knows their date and time and would probably love the support of the community to come to their event.
