Ole Miss Women’s Tennis Earns Top ITA Academic Honor
Not only did the Ole Miss women’s tennis team make their sixth consecutive NCAA appearance, but the Rebels earned the ITA All-Academic Team Award for the 18th straight year, as announced Thursday.
The Rebels were one of nine Southeastern Conference teams to earn the ITA All-Academic Team Award.
This award honors teams with outstanding academic achievements, requiring a minimum overall 3.2 grade point average to be considered.  The Rebels posted an impressive 3.52 cumulative team GPA for the year.
Five players were recognized as ITA Scholar-Athletes:  Mai El Kamash, Julia Jones, Marija Milutinovic, Caroline Rohde-Moe, and Erin Stephens. To be eligible for ITA Scholar-Athlete recognition student-athletes must have a GPA of 3.50 or higher for the year.
“To receive this award 18 straight years is a tribute to the players, who are dedicated to being outstanding in the classroom as well as on the court,” head coach Mark Beyers said. “They are very deserving of this distinction. These honors are also a direct reflection of the tremendous support we receive from the university, the athletics administration and the academic staff.”
Rohde-Moe posted a perfect 4.0 GPA for the year to earn the honor for the third time in her career.  She graduated with honors in May with a degree in Managerial Finance and Banking and Finance.  The All-SEC honoree, earned plenty of academic honors, including a Taylor Medal, awarded to the top one percent of each academic school at Ole Miss.
Jones received the distinction for the third time in as many years posting a 3.64 GPA for the year, while earning All-SEC second team honors.
El Kamash (3.76), Milutinovic (3.50) and Stephens (3.73) all garnered the award for the second time.
The Rebels placed all seven returning players on the SEC Academic Honor Roll, which was also announced Thursday. Rising senior Iris Verboven and soon-to-be junior Allie Robbins joined these five on the SEC Academic Honor Roll.

While making their 21st consecutive NCAA appearance in 2014, the Ole Miss men’s tennis team achieved great success in the classroom, earning the ITA All-Academic Team Award for the fourth year in a row and ninth time overall, as announced Thursday.
The Rebels are one of seven schools from the SEC to be named an ITA All-Academic Team.
This award honors teams with outstanding academic achievements, requiring a minimum overall 3.2 grade point average to be considered.   The Rebels posted a cumulative GPA of 3.28 for the 2013-14 year.
In addition, three Rebels were named ITA Scholar-Athletes Thursday and four made the SEC Academic Honor Roll.  The Rebels have had at least one player named an ITA Scholar-Athlete 13 straight years.
“I am very pleased with how well the team performed in the classroom this past year,” head coach Toby Hansson said. “The guys take their academics seriously and to earn the ITA All-Academic Team Award once again is something they can be very proud of. This honor is not only a reflection of the team, but the great support we receive from the university, the athletics administration and the academic staff.”
Backstrom was joined on the ITA Scholar-Athlete list by teammates William Kallberg, who will be a senior and rising sophomore Ricardo Jorge. To be eligible for ITA Scholar-Athlete recognition student-athletes must have a GPA of 3.50 or higher for the year.

Stefan Lindmark and Joe Rogers joined Backstrom and Kallberg on the SEC Academic Honor Roll.
Ole Miss advanced to the NCAA regional final and boasted the SEC Player of the Year, Nik Scholtz. The Rebels were the only school in Division I tennis to have an All-American (Scholtz) and an Academic All-American (Backstrom).

Ole Miss senior safety Cody Prewitt has been named to yet another preseason award watch list, as the Jim Thorpe Award released its 2014 list Friday.
This is the third watch list on which Prewitt has appeared this preseason. He is also a candidate for the Bronko Nagurski Trophy and the Chuck Bednarik Award, which both honor the nation’s best defensive player.
Prewitt was a Thorpe Award semifinalist last year when he earned first team All-America honors as a free safety after leading the SEC and ranking among the nation’s leaders with six interceptions. The Bay Springs, Mississippi, native has been tabbed by most of the preseason magazines to repeat as an All-American in 2014.
The Jim Thorpe Award, which goes to the nation’s best defensive back, was established in 1986 and is named after history’s greatest all-around athlete, Jim Thorpe. Thorpe excelled as a running back, passer and kicker on the offensive side of the ball, but also stood out as a defensive back. In addition to his legendary performance on the football field, Thorpe played professional baseball and won Olympic gold medals in the decathlon and pentathlon.
The Jim Thorpe Award watch list is chosen by a screening committee who compile a list of 30-50 players. The list is not final, and players who have outstanding seasons are added as the season progresses. The Thorpe Award Winner is selected from three finalists and will be announced at The Home Depot College Football Awards on Thursday, Dec. 11, 2014 on ESPN.<
The Jim Thorpe Award Banquet will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2015 in Oklahoma City.
The Jim Thorpe Award is a member of the National College Football Awards Association (NCFAA) which encompasses the most prestigious awards in college football. The 21 awards boast 699 years of tradition-selection excellence. Visit www.NCFAA.org to learn more.
