This weekend California Chrome tries to become only the 12th thoroughbred in history to win the triple crown by being victorious in the 146th running of the Belmont Stakes.
California Chrome has already left the rest of the field in the dust twice with wins at the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness.
The last horse to win the Triple Crown was Affirmed back in 1978.
The Belmont sets up nicely for Chrome at a mile and a half. He will run out of the gate in second position at the post. In the past two races, he has gotten faster each run. From his Belmont starting point,  racing experts say he should be able to take advantage of that starting position to secure a spot in history.
California Chrome’s trainer Art Sherman told the New York Times in a recent interview: “I really think you are going to see the next Triple Crown winner.”
Millions of Belmont Stakes watchers around the country hope that Chrome (3-5 odds) will be the next Triple Crown winner in a story that can’t hurt the horse racing industry. Despite this reality, there are ten other contenders iwho hope to prevent the talented colt from making history.
Some of the favorites include Wicked Strong (6-1), Tonalist (8-1), Ride on Curlin (12-1) and Commanding Curve (15-1).
Belmont Stakes post time is set for 5:52 p.m. on NBC. The Purse set at $1.5 million.
