Lafayette County’s First County-Wide Pen Pal Program Begins This Summer
The Yoknapatawpha Arts Council in Oxford, MS announced that they will be hosting a county wide pen pal program this summer. This event, called Howdy Neighbor, will be a free program for all ages that encourages storytelling, handwriting, and literacy through letter writing.
Howdy Neighbor will evolve in three phases. The first phase is from May 1st through 31st where residents of Lafayette County will be asked to sign up online at https://goo.gl/fyC1lb for their free letter in the mail. Names, mailing addresses and ages are required to complete this stage. Second, the YAC will ask for volunteers to help write letters between June 1st to June 15th. Residents can chose to write one letter or 100. Finally the completed letters will be mailed to every resident who signed up in May, by the end of June.
“We want to encourage neighbors meeting neighbors, but also spread that joy of receiving letters in the mail. In an age where we see more pictures of people’s food and hear less of their stories, we hope Howdy Neighbor brings back that charm of pen pals and letter writing,” says Stacey Sanford Americorps VISTA member with the Arts Council.
