Crockett's Vision Led to Today's Double Decker Art Festival

Published

on

In the early 80’s, Evelyn Crockett had a vision of a festival to showcase Oxford’s artist, of all stripes.
Thus after tirelessly lobbying the mayor and Board of Alderman and with much planning, the first Arts and All That Jazz Fest was held on the Square and Courthouse lawn. The festival grew and evolved into what is now a nationally known annual event in Oxford — Double Decker Arts Festival.

Visiting here on the Courthouse lawn at that first festival is Crockett with Oxford icons Edmund and Ephraim Lowe. The brothers played the Gowrie twins in MGM's motion picture of William Faulkner's, Intruder in the Dust. Evelyn recalls, "I was the only woman to come between the Lowe brothers!"
