Receivers Have Talent to Lead High-Flying Ole Miss Aerial Game

Over the past two days at HottyToddy.com, we’ve broken down Rebel football by positions based on spring performance. We all look forward to the season opener in Atlanta against Boise State in the Chick-fil-A Kick-Off.
Today, we turn our attention to Coach Hugh Freeze’s wide-receiving and tight-end corps. At the end of last season, junior Donte Moncrief left Oxford for the NFL. No need for the Ole Miss faithful to wonder if our wide-outs and tight ends will lose a step, if spring practice is any indication. Our pass-catchers looked sharp and ready to go to war.

From last year’s highly touted freshman class, Laquon Treadwell looked like a seasoned veteran after one year of SEC play. Treadwell is solidly entrenched as Ole Miss’ No. 1 receiver now that Moncrief is about to get fed in the NFL.
Treadwell entered Ole Miss as the No. 5 recruit in the nation according to Rivals.com. He was projected as a Freshman All-America third team by Athlon and lived up to his billing. By the end of the year, Treadwell had been named SEC Freshman of the Year by the league’s coaches. He was the first Rebel in school history receive that honor.
During the Grove Bowl, Treadwell had two receptions for 46-yards. One of his catches went for a touchdown and his longest grab went for 25-yards.

The Rebels also return Evan Engram, who proved a major weapon at tight-end for coach Freeze and his staff and also was selected to the All-SEC second team as a freshman. In eight games, Engram pulled in 21 receptions for 268 yards and three touchdowns.
His Grove Bowl numbers were a lot like his regular season numbers. He totaled two receptions for 77 yards. One of Engrams catches exploded for 68 yards.
In the spring, the coach’s saw great performances at the other receiving spots to go along with Engram and Treadwell.

Like the emergence of junior Cody Core, who played in all 12 games last season and split time between wide-receiver, defensive back and on special teams. Core captured four receptions for 91 yards in 2013.
Core pulled in four Grove Bowl balls for 51 yards. His longest reception went for 21 yards.
The offensive coaching staff also moved Mark Dodson out to receiver during the spring game and he caught two balls for 69 yards and a touchdown.

Junior college transfer, Brandon Bell, showed huge promise at the tight end position. Bell came to Ole Miss from East Mississippi Community College. During the spring game, Bell recorded one reception for 22 yards and a touchdown.
Knowing that Bo Wallace has had a full spring to work with this receiving corps while showcasing his rejuvenated arm, leads this observer to predict the sky is the limit on yards and points for this potent offense and passing attack.
Chapter three in this journey looks bright for this Ole Miss Rebel team which is led by coach Freeze.
