Flower Power Show is Today at the Powerhouse
Flower lovers should stop by the Powerhouse for the biennial Flower Power Show, from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. today.
The standard flower show, presented by the Oxford Garden Club, is free and open to the public.
The show will include all types of flowers, according to garden club member Nan Davis. All exhibits in the horticultural division are grown by club members, she said. The exhibit will also include shrubs, trees, cut specimens and some container-grown plants, but no vegetables or whole shrubs.
Exhibits will include the botanic name for each plant, to help members of the public understand what grows best in the Oxford area and to easily find plants for their yards. Plants at the show are for display only.
“We have had a hard winter and we are concerned that we may not have as much horticulture as in years past,” Davis said.
The club is active in the community, and its projects include promoting backyard habitats for birds and butterflies, city beautification, garden therapy for the Veterans Home, conservation awareness and promoting Arbor Day, she said.
The club also has a Junior Garden Club (the Rowan Oak Junior Garden Club) at Oxford Elementary, and sponsors the Woodsey Owl and Smokey the Bear wildfire prevention poster and essay contests in Oxford and Lafayette elementary schools.
