For their elite performances at last weekend’s NCAA Indoor Championships, Ole Miss junior Sam Kendricks and freshman Jalen Miller were named first team All-Americans by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Monday.
The duo helped the Ole Miss men place in a tie for 24th at the national championships held in Albuqerque, N.M. It was the third straight top-25 national finish for the Ole Miss men’s track program.
Kendricks was runner-up in the pole vault, despite matching his school record and 2014 American best mark of 18-8.25. The winner, Akron’s Shawn Barber, set a Canadian national record with his jump of 18-10.25. Both marks rank them top 10 in NCAA indoor history.
A native of Oxford, Miss., Kendricks earned USTFCCCA All-America honors for the fourth time (twice indoors and twice outdoors).
Miller, a native of Tunica, Miss., burst onto the collegiate scene by placing eighth in the championship final of the 60 meter dash. He’s the first freshman from the Ole Miss men’s team to earn All-America honors in the 60 since Mike Granger in 2010.
First-team honors were given to those who placed in the championships’ top eight in an event or were a member of an eight-person final. Second-team honors were earned by those who finished between ninth and 16th place. In addition, 14 men and four women earned honorable mention honors. USTFCCCA membership by a program is required to earn All-America awards.
The Rebels will now turn their attention to the outdoor season, which begins at home Saturday with the Ole Miss Open. Admission is free. –Ole Miss Sports Information
